WE MAKE SPEAR
So began the legacy of the Thunder Island Tribe, a small extended family of spear fishers inhabiting a coastal region of a (probably volcanic) island. Their camp surrounds a sandy area with a firepit and a large flat stone with a depression suitable for use as a giant bowl/cauldron.
The first generation hunted snakes in the trees, and then defended their camp against the mother snake that followed them back. (Giant snakes are classic. The one from the previous (unrelated) game could swim, and struck with a bony plate in its snout. This one could climb and spit a foul smelling caustic bile.) The tribe managed to pin the beast’s tail down, immobilizing it enough for the others to slay it. One member with cooking skills took a stab at dissecting the thing, and extracted an intact bile sac, as well as enough snake-steaks for a feast.
Meanwhile other members of the tribe had encountered a few strange deer-aspected pygmies at the edge of the primordial forest, and slain one to drag back to the camp. The cook had less fortune trying to prise the secrets from this corpse, and merely rendered it an unrecognizable mess which the rest of the tribe just assumed were deer remains, thwarting any effort to warn of a potential threat.
Generation two arrived back at the camp from a long hunt and settled in to prepare their kill when they were suddenly surrounded by rock throwing pygmies! This generation was considerably more Civil than their predecessors, and had to resort to unorthodox measures to combat the invaders, waving torches and trying to intimidate them into running away. A few did, others fought bitterly, but just when it looked like the tribe was getting the upper hand, they were alarmed by the arrival of a Theriomorph Chieftan, much larger and cleverer than its smaller cousins. They half threatened, half bluffed, making a show of the several therio corpses they’ve dispatched, and the Chieftan considered them cannily before turning to stride into the night [+I must reckon with the tribe].
The tribe made the most of their victory, harvesting the antlers of the deermen for bone-tipped spears, not weighted well for throwing, but more deadly at close quarters. They put some of the heads on spears and stuck them into the ground at the edge of the camp the Chieftan had approached as a war totem, ensuring that any future attackers would think twice before invading. And finally one artistically inclined member painted a mural depicting their victory on the side of the soupstone, boosting the morale of the tribe [+3 Tribe Dice].
There was peace for a while, and they tried their hands at fashioning a few crude boats (really just logs with notches to sit in and poles to steer), and goat husbandry, until the Monsoon Season began, and the tribe hurried to construct shelters before the floods washed them out. One became curious about the source of the crashing thunder that gave the island its name and tried to climb higher to find it, but a bolt of lightning struck a nearby tree, sending it crashing down on one of the shelters and pinning another tribesman. The others rushed to his aid as best they could in the slippery mud and torrential rains, and carried him to another hut to tend his wounds.
I intend to introduce the third generation at the next EnWorld Game Day, and see where things go from there. Will the tribe face the wrath of the therio-pygmies, or make peace with them? Will they know why thunder? Will they leave the island? So far it’s proved fairly easy to roll one game into the next, and the second group was so pleased to have inherited from the first that they went out of their way to pay it forward by improving the lot of the tribe.
I intend to start each group with the normal number of Tribe Dice (except for the one-time +3 bonus from the mural, that will carry over at least one generation). I usually do a good job of setting stakes when I remember to do so- I had to get the players to remind me a few times. I also added the potential to spend (6 x Players XP) to buy a new Tribe Quality.
